New Book Revisits Tragedies of CCP’s “Great Leap Forward”

A new book, “Chairman Mao’s Purgatory” was published in Hong Kong to meet the occasion. Its author says the book will restore a page in history that the Communist regime is trying hard to erase. “Chairman Mao’s Purgatory” is photojournalist Du Bin’s latest publication. Released last week in Hong Kong, the book travels back in time with a collection of photos and historic records of the Chinese regime’s so called “Great Leap Forward” campaign. The campaign was the brain-child of the then Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong. It was one of the worst periods of economic mismanagement. Mao’s pursuit of rapid agricultural and industrial development led to the death of tens of millions of Chinese peasants from 1959 to 1962. The period is considered a great embarrassment for the Chinese regime, and is glossed over in history books. Du says he wants his new book to fill in the gaps of the past, as the CCP celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. However, its operation started without its technology being matured. Some commentators believe that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials’ mentality of “Great Leap Forward” destined the passengers’ deaths. They use the lives of citizens in exchange for the CCP’s political achievement and international recognition. The Chinese high-speed railway cost RMB trillions to build, but it is extremely fragile. After the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail opened in June, six major incidents took place within five days. The disastrous collision on July 23 caused over 200 casualties. Netizens that conduct business with the railway system revealed that with the current technology and management, China’s high-speed rail operates at the price of 300-400 deaths per year. Guangdong’s Southern Metropolitan Daily editorial said, “Even before the accident, the high-speed rail’s ‘great leap forward’ was strongly doubted. However, the doubts were responded with intense suppression. Yangzi Evening News reported on July 27, the Wenzhou high-speed rail accident victims’ families’ representative Yang Feng confirmed that he was pressured. Economists feel that this is incredible, because that would indicate a 90% increase in productivity, without changes in relevant conditions. They believe it is only another “great leap.” Xinhua News reported on Dec. 4 that by end of Oct. 2011, over 10 million sets of economic apartments were under construction, 1 month in advance of the date planned. Xinhua said China was seeing a “boom” of economic housing. However, real estate analysts have said it is a “mission impossible.” Dec. 2, Ren Zhiqiang, president of Beijing Huayuan Property Co., published an article in the Wall Street Journal, saying that China’shousing construction had turned another corner in the “Great Leap Forward.” He said the CCP is again showing its blindness and disrespect for China’s Economic conditions, as well as for scientific principles. Ren pointed out in the article that the CCP’sofficial claim simply cannot be seen as realistic , due to inadequate land, capital, and production capacity. First, the land for economic housing cannot redeem its input. Therefore it is difficult to obtain the land needed.
